Note: In Japanese architecture, an interior space that may have evolved historically from the private altars of Zen Buddhist monks, used for the display of devotional objects; then later as elevated seating for warriors or dignitaries. The most recent use of the space in Japanese houses is for the display of flower arrangements and scrolls that set the mood of the tea ceremony, or other art objects.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... In de Japanse architectuur een alkoof. Oorspronkelijk waarschijnlijk bedoeld voor de privéaltaren van zenboeddhistische monniken, een ruimte waar ze hun heilige objecten uitstalden. Later werden ze gebruikt voor de verhoogde zetels van krijgers en hoogwaardigheidsbekleders. Tegenwoordig is de ruimte in Japanse huizen bestemd voor het uitstallen van bloemstukken en versieringen die voor sfeer zorgen tijdens de theeceremonie, of van andere kunstvoorwerpen. 
German ..... In der japanischen Architektur ein Innenraum, der sich historisch aus dem Privataltar von Zen-Buddhistischen Mönchen entwickelt haben könnte und genutzt wird, um Devotionalien auszustellen; später erhöhter Sitz für Krieger oder Würdenträger. Die jüngste Verwendung in japanischen Häusern ist die Präsentation von Blumen-Arrangements und Schriftrollen, die eine Teezeremonie oder andere Kunstobjekte inszeniert.
