Note: Refers to altarpieces produced primarily in Germany, Austria, and the Tyrol in the 15th and 16th centuries. The term means 'carved altarpiece' in German. Schnitzaltars could be located on either the high altar or side altars; they are characterized by being profusely colored and gilded and having four sections: a central shrine containing sculpture, under which is a smaller shrine commonly referred to by the Italian term 'predella,' and two movable pairs of shutters or wings, containing either paintings or relief carvings on both front and back. Opening and closing the wings provided variety, generally relating to the liturgical calendar. The shrine section was typically surmounted by an architectural superstructure of carved tracery and sculpture niches.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar altaarstukken die voornamelijk werden geproduceerd in Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Tirol in de 15de en 16de eeuw. De term is Duits voor 'gebeeldhouwd altaarstuk'. Schnitzaltaren werden geplaatst op de hoogaltaren of de zijaltaren. Ze worden gekenmerkt door de overdadige kleuring en vergulding, en de vier secties: een centraal heiligdom met beeldhouwwerk, met daaronder een kleiner heiligdom dat meestal werd aangeduid met de Italiaanse term 'predella' en twee beweegbare paren luiken of vleugels met schilderingen of reliëfversieringen aan de voor- en achterkant. Het openen en sluiten van de vleugels zorgde voor afwisseling, meestal met betrekking tot de liturgische kalender. Het heiligdom ging meestal schuil onder een architecturale bovenbouw van gesneden maaswerk en nissen voor beeldhouwwerken. |

Ein Schnitzaltar kann entweder auf dem Hochalter oder auf Seitenaltären stehen; er ist charakteristischerweise üppig bemalt und vergoldet und kann bis zu vier Teile: einen zentralen Schrein mit Skulpturen, einen kleineren Schrein darunter, der gewöhnlich als 'Predella' bezeichnet wird, und zwei bewegliche Paare von Laden oder Flügeln, die entweder Gemälde oder Reliefschnitzereien sowohl auf der Vorderseite als auf der Rückseite enthalten. Das Öffnen und Schließen der Flügel bot Vielfalt, allgemein in Bezug zum liturgischen Kalender. Der zentrale Schrein wurde gewöhnlich überragt von einem architektonischen Aufbau aus geschnitztem Maßwerk und Skulpturnischen. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a cuadros de altar producidos principalmente en Alemania, Austria y el Tirol en los siglos XV y XVI. El término en alemán significa "cuadro de altar esculpido". Un Schnitzaltar puede estar localizado en la parte superior del altar o en los altares laterales; se caracterizan por estar profusamente policromados y dorados y poseen cuatro secciones: un recuadro central contiene escultura, bajo el cual un recuadro pequeño, comúnmente denominado con el término italiano "predella", y dos pares movibles de alas o contraventanas, con pinturas o relieves esculpidos en ambos lados: frente y parte posterior. El abrir y cerrar las alas les daba variedad, generalmente relacionado con el calendario litúrgico. La sección del altar fue generalmente montado en una estructura arquitectónica con tracerias esculpidas y nichos para esculturas. |
