Note: General term for greenstone found on South Island, New Zealand. The term refers to any of three different types of stone: nephrite, bowenite, and serpentinite. Maori do not classify pounamu by geological origin, but by appearance according to color, markings, and translucency. There are many local names for different pounamu, but four main varieties are widely recognized: inanga, kahurangi, kawakawa, and tangiwai.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Algemene term voor groensteen die wordt gevonden op het Zuid-eiland van Nieuw-Zeeland. De term verwijst naar een van drie verschillende soorten steen: nefriet, boweniet en serpentiniet. Maori's classificeren pounamu niet naar geologische herkomst, maar naar verschijningsvorm: kleur, markeringen en doorschijnendheid. Er zijn veel lokale namen voor de verschillende soorten pounamu, maar vier soortnamen worden breed gebruikt: inanga, kahurangi, kawakawa en tangiwai.
