Note: Egyptian holiday with ancient origins, celebrating the natural cycle of the Nile; it is held during two weeks annually starting August 15. In Ancient Egypt, the flooding was associated with the tears of Isis for Osiris, her deceased husband. In the Coptic Church the ritual includes ceremonially throwing a martyr's relic into the river. With the construction of High Dam at Aswan, the annual flooding cycle in Egypt came to an end in 1970.

| Dutch ..... Egyptisch feest van oude origine, waarin de natuurlijke overstromingscyclus van de Nijl wordt gevierd. Het wordt jaarlijks gevierd en duurt twee weken, beginnende op 15 augustus. In het oude Egypte werd de overstroming geassocieerd met de tranen die Isis liet voor Osiris, haar overleden echtgenoot. Binnen de koptische Kerk behelst het ritueel onder meer het ceremonieel in de rivier werpen van een martelaarsrelikwie. Door de aanleg van de stuwdam bij Aswan in 1970 kwam de jaarlijkse overstromingscyclus in Egypte ten einde. |
