Note: A quartz crystal microbalance is an extremely sensitive sensor which weighs mass per area by measuring change in the freqency of an acoustic resonator. It is composed of a specially cut quartz crystal set between two electrodes that oscillates at its resonance frequency when AC power is applied through the electrodes due to the piezoelectric effect.

| Dutch ..... Een kwartsmicrobalans is een uiterst gevoelige sensor die massa per oppervlakte weegt door verandering in de frequentie van een akoestische resonator te meten. Hij bestaat uit een speciaal gesneden kwartskristal tussen twee elektroden, dat oscilleert bij zijn resonantiefrequentie wanneer als gevolg van het piëzo-elektrisch effect wisselstroom wordt opgewekt via de elektroden. |
