Note: Originally a pipe or reed (hence the name arundo, which means "reed") with which the celebrant of the Mass may sip the communion wine, instead of the celebrant and all communicants putting their lips to the rim of the same cup. Use of the arundo was known from the Carolingian period onwards, when the arundo was made of a precious material such as gold; for example, in the papal high mass, a golden arundo is used.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Oorspronkelijk een pijpje of rietje (vandaar de naam arundo, dat 'riet' betekent) waarmee de voorganger van de mis nipt van de communiewijn, zodat de voorganger en de communiegangers niet met hun mond uit dezelfde beker hoeven te drinken. Het gebruik van de arundo is bekend sinds de Karolingische tijd, toen de arundo van een kostbaar materiaal als goud was gemaakt. Zo wordt er voor de pauselijke hoogmis een gouden arundo gebruikt.
