Note: Devices for supporting a cross on the altar and by extension, any device for supporting or fixing a cross at or near the altar. As early as the 5th and 6th centuries there is evidence in Byzantine art of partly combined candlesticks and cross, which are the precursors to cross feet as the form developed in the later Middle Ages. There are four main groups of cross feet placed on the altar: four-sided, three-sided, circular, and architectural.

| Dutch ..... Middel ter ondersteuning van een kruis op het altaar of, bij uitbreiding, ieder middel ter ondersteuning of bevestiging van een kruis bij of nabij het altaar. Al in de 5de en 6de eeuw zijn er in Byzantijnse kunst aanwijzingen te vinden van gedeeltelijke combinaties van kandelaars en kruizen, die de voorlopers vormen van de kruisvoeten zoals deze in de late middeleeuwen werden ontwikkeld. Er zijn vier hoofdsoorten van op het altaar geplaatste kruisvoeten: vierkantige, driekantige, ronde en architectonische. |
