Note: Originally refers to puritan and ascetic separatists who followed the teachings of the Roman bishop Novatian in the 3rd century. In the Middle Ages the term came to refer to a highly organized sect that rejected sacraments and believed in a neo-Manichaean dualism in which good and evil were separate spheres and the material world was evil. Cathars led rigorously ascetic and celibate lives. The faithful were divided into two groups: the 'perfect' and the 'believers.' The perfect were set apart from the latter group by a ceremony of initiation called the 'consolamentum.' The sect was seen as a serious threat to the Roman Catholic Church in the 13th and 14th centuries, particularly in southern France. The Cathars declined in the 14th century due to repression by the Inquisition, disagreement amongst followers regarding dualism, and the newly appealing piety and devotion of the Franciscans. Although the term is sometimes used interchangeably with 'Albigenses,' this is actually a branch of the Catharistic movement. The Cathars was related to the Bogomils and Paulicans, other medieval sects that had similar beliefs in dualism.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst oorspronkelijk naar puriteinse en ascetische separatisten die in de 3de eeuw de leer van de Romeinse bisschop Novatianus volgden. In de middeleeuwen ging de term verwijzen naar een goed georganiseerde geloofsgemeenschap die de sacramenten verwierp en geloofde in een neomanicheïstisch dualisme waarin goed en kwaad afzonderlijke sferen waren en de materiële wereld slecht was. Katharen leidden een streng ascetisch en celibatair leven. Volgelingen werden verdeeld in twee groepen: de 'volmaakten' en de 'gelovigen’. De volmaakten werden gescheiden van de rest door een initiatieceremonie die het consolamentum werd genoemd. De beweging werd in de 13de en 14de eeuw als een ernstige bedreiging voor de rooms-katholieke kerk beschouwd, vooral in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het aantal katharen nam in de 14de eeuw af als gevolg van de onderdrukking door de inquisitie, onenigheid onder de gelovigen ten aanzien van het dualisme en de nieuwe aantrekkingskracht van de vroomheid en devotie van de franciscanen. Hoewel de term soms wordt gebruikt als synoniem van 'albigenzen', zijn de laatstgenoemden eigenlijk een afscheiding van de katharen. En la Edad Media el término llegó a referirse a una secta muy organizada que rechazaba los sacramentos y creía en un dualismo del neo-Maniqueísmo en que el bien y el mal era esferas separadas y el mundo material era demoníaco. Los cátaros llevaban vidas rigurosamente célibes y ascéticas. Los creyentes fueron divididos en dos grupos: los "perfectos" y los "creyentes".
