Note: A Christian renewal movement that emphasizes the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles at the first Christian Pentecost. The modern Pentecostal movement arose in the United States in 1901 with Charles Parham who linked baptism with speaking in tongues. The reappearance of prophecy and healing are also part of Pentacostalism. Pentecostal churches are characterized by their various forms of participatory and informal worship and by their literal interpretation of the Bible. The movement probably appeals to impoverished and less-educated people in part because there is a general emphasis on spiritual experience rather than intellectual reflection. Missionary work is typically a high priority but the formation of a representative body of Pentecostals is usually opposed just as is the ecumenical movement. Since the 1960s Pentacostalism has appeared within the Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Greek Orthodox churches.

| Dutch ..... Een christelijke vernieuwingsbeweging die de nadruk legt op de afdaling van de Heilige Geest op de apostelen tijdens de eerste christelijke pinksterdag. De moderne pinksterbeweging ontstond in 1901 in de Verenigde Staten toen Charles Parham een verband legde tussen de doop en het spreken in tongen. Ook de terugkeer van profetie en gebedsgenezing is een onderdeel van de pinksterbeweging. Pinksterkerken kenmerken zich door de uiteenlopende vormen van participatie en informaliteit in de eredienst en door hun letterlijke uitleg van de Bijbel. De beweging spreekt armen en laagopgeleiden waarschijnlijk deels aan omdat er in het algemeen meer nadruk wordt gelegd op spirituele beleving dan op intellectuele reflectie. Zendingswerk heeft gewoonlijk een hoge prioriteit maar de vorming van een vertegenwoordigend lichaam van pinkstergemeenten stuit op veel weerstand, evenals de oecumenische beweging. Sinds de jaren 60 van de 20ste eeuw is de pinksterbeweging ook opgedoken binnen de rooms-katholieke, de protestantse en de Grieks-orthodoxe kerk. |
| Spanish ..... Un movimiento cristiano de renovación que da énfasis al descenso del Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles en el primer Pentecostés cristiano. El movimiento moderno Pentecostal surgió en los Estados Unidos en 1901 con Charles Parham que relacionó el bautismo con la facultad de hablar en otros idiomas. La reaparición de la profecía y de la sanación también son parte del Pentacostalismo. Las iglesias Pentecostales se caracterizan por sus varias formas de culto participativo e informal y por su interpretación literal de la Biblia.
