Note: Refers to English earthenware that is cream-colored with a transparent lead glaze dating from the second half of the 18th century; it also refers to imitations of this English ware. It was originally developed by Staffordshire potters, who were experimenting to find a substitute for Chinese porcelain. Around 1750 they created a a fine white earthenware with a rich yellowish glaze; the ware had a light body and clean glaze, making it desirable for domestic ware. At the time, the cream color was considered a fault; as an improvement, Wedgwood introduced a white to bluish white product called "pearlware" in 1779. It was produced for nearly a century. Creamware, however, continued to be made throughout the 19th century and later.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 指18世紀下半葉之後所製造的英格蘭米色土器，上有透明鉛釉；包括其仿製品。其做法由斯塔福郡的陶藝家在尋找中國瓷器代替品的實驗過程中所發現。1750年左右，他們創造出一種表面塗上黃釉的精緻白色土器；器皿本身重量頗輕，加上其釉面乾淨，成爲適合的家用器皿。當時，米色被視爲一種瑕疵；為了改善外觀，瑋緻活(Wedgwood)在1779年推出一種白色或藍白色的產品，稱爲「珍珠白陶器」，其生產維持了近一世紀。然而，米色土器在19世紀以後仍持續製作。 |
| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een in Engeland geproduceerd type aardewerk uit de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw, met een romige kleur en voorzien van een transparant loodglazuur; de term verwijst eveneens naar imitaties van Engels aardewerk. Engels aardewerk is van oorsprong ontwikkeld door pottenbakkers uit Staffordshire, die experimenten uitvoerden in de hoop een vervanging voor Chinees porselein te vinden. Rond 1750 creëerden ze een fijn wit type aardewerk met een vol gelig glazuur; de lichte romp en het transparante glazuur maakten dit type aardewerk bij uitstek geschikt voor huishoudelijk gebruik. De roomkleur werd destijds nog als onvolkomenheid beschouwd; in 1779 kwam Wedgwood met een verbetering, een blauwwit product dat hij 'pearlware' noemde. Dit type aardewerk bleef bijna een eeuw lang in productie. Engels aardewerk werd echter de gehele 19de en 20ste eeuw vervaardigd, tot op de dag van vandaag. |
