Note: Refers to the Christian feast and festival observed on December 25 to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Its observance is first documented in Rome in 336. The practice of celebrating on December 25 began in the 4th century in the Western church as a Christian replacement for the pagan festival held on the winter solstice to celebrate the birth of the unconquered sun. The East originally gave the date of January 6 for the nativity but the date of December 25 was generally accepted by the 5th century; the Armenian Church, however, still celebrates on January 6. Christmas took on the festivity (i.e. decorations and gift-giving) of the Roman Saturnalia and other pagan festivals of that time of year. Christmas has continued to accumulate traditions over the centuries; many of the customs associated with the holiday are of non-Christian origin. Evergreens, for example, are symbols of survival and have been associated with Christmas ever since the European Middle Ages. Christmas is traditionally regarded as a festival of the family and of children. In many countries presents are exchanged in the name of or in the spirit of the holiday's patron, Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar het christelijke feest waarmee op 25 december de geboorte van Jezus Christus wordt gevierd. Het kerstfeest is voor het eerst gedocumenteerd in 336 in Rome. Het gebruik om het feest op 25 december te vieren ontstond in de 4de eeuw in de westerse kerk als christelijke opvolger van het heidense midwinterfeest, waarmee de geboorte van de onoverwonnen zon werd gevierd. In het oosten werd aanvankelijk 6 januari als geboortedatum van Christus aangehouden, maar in de 5de eeuw was 25 december algemeen aanvaard; de Armeense kerk viert echter nog altijd Kerstmis op 6 januari. Kerstmis heeft het feestelijke element (versieringen, geschenken) overgenomen van de Romeinse Saturnalia en andere heidense feesten in dezelfde tijd van het jaar. Kerstmis is in de loop van de eeuwen tradities blijven opnemen; veel tegenwoordige kerstgewoonten zijn van niet-christelijke oorsprong. Altijdgroene bomen zijn bijvoorbeeld symbolen van overleven en worden al met Kerstmis geassocieerd sinds de Europese middeleeuwen. Kerstmis wordt vanouds beschouwd als een familie- en kinderfeest. La práctica de celebrar el 25 de Diciembre comenzó en siglo IV en la iglesia occidental como remplazo al festival pagano practicado el solsticio de invierno para celebrar el nacimiento del sol invicto (sol invictus). El Oriente originalmente dió la fecha del 6 de Enero para la natividad pero la fecha del 25 de Diciembre fué generalmente aceptada en el siglo V; sin embargo, la Iglesia Armenia aún celbra el 6 de Enero. La Navidad tomada de la festividad (decoración y entrega de regalos) romana Saturnalia y otros festivales paganos de esa época del año.
