Note: Refers to the way of thinking, prominent in the 1960s and 1970s in America, associated with the rejection of stable, middle-class values and conservative attitudes in regard to fashion, politics, musical tastes, education, and social values. The movement is generally characterized by radical political beliefs, sexual liberation, provocative fashion styles, and drug use. In a limited sense, the movement also catalyzed the spirit of the civil rights and environmental movements of the 1960s.

Verwijst naar de denkrichting die in de jaren zestig en zeventig van de twintigste eeuw navolging vond in Noord-Amerika, die verband hield met de verwerping van de stabiele waarden van de middenklasse en de conservatieve houding ten opzichte van mode, politiek, muziek, opleiding en sociale waarden. De beweging wordt in het algemeen gekenmerkt door radicale politieke overtuigingen, seksuele vrijheid, provocerende kleding en drugsgebruik. In beperktere zin was dit de beweging die de katalysator was voor de burgerrechten- en milieubeweging in de jaren zestig van de twintigste eeuw. |
