Note: Places for prayer comprising a room or building for private worship; typically located in a church, madrasa, house, monastery, guild hall, or other locations associated with various religions or rites. In the Roman Catholic church, the usage and number of services allowed in an oratory are defined by canon law. In Christian architecture, oratories seem to have originated from the chapels erected over the tombs of the early martyrs where the faithful gathered to pray, combined with the necessity of having a place of worship for the people in rural districts at a time when churches proper were restricted to cathedral cities.

Ort des Gebets, der aus einem Raum oder einem Gebäude für die private Andacht besteht; üblicherweise in einer Kirche, Madrasa, einem Haus, Kloster, Zunfthaus oder an anderer, mit den verschiedensten Religionen oder Riten verbundenen Stelle gelegen. In der römisch-katholischen Kirche sind der Gebrauch und die Anzahl der Gottesdienste in einem Oratorium vom Kirchenrecht festgelegt. In der christlichen Architektur sind Oratorien wohl aus den Kapellen entstanden, die über den Gräbern der frühen Märtyrer errichtet wurden, an denen sich die Gläubigen zum Gebet versammelten, in Verbindung mit der Notwendigkeit, für Menschen in ländlichen Gebieten einen Ort des Gebets zu haben, als reguläre Kirchen nur in Domstädten stehen durften. |
