Note: Objects bearing special or distinctive marks and worn for decoration or to signify affiliation. Originally, badges were heraldic symbols worn as identifying marks by a knight and his retainers, e.g., a badge of arms. In later use, the term refers to any distinctive device, emblem, or mark worn to indicate a person's affiliation, rank, office, name, or membership in an organization or support for a cause, particularly objects that comprise small pieces of metal, card, plastic, etc., that bear a distinguishing design or words.

Dutch ..... Voorwerpen met speciale of onderscheidende kenmerken, tekens, of middelen die een aanduiding zijn van lidmaatschap, loyaliteit, autoriteit of bevoegdheid. Ze worden meestal op het lichaam gedragen. 
German ..... Objekt, das besondere oder spezifische Merkmale trägt, und zu dekorativen Zwecken getragen wird oder um Zugehörigkeit anzuzeigen. Ursprünglich waren Abzeichen heraldische Symbole zur Identifizierung eines Ritters und seiner Gefolgsleute, z.B. ein Abzeichen mit Wappen. Im späteren Gebrauch bezieht sich der Begriff auf jedes Objekt, Symbol oder Zeichen, welches zur Kennzeichnung von Zugehörigkeit, Rang, Amt, Name oder Mitgliedschaft in einer Organisation oder zur Unterstützung eines Anliegens getragen wird. Besonders Objekte mit kleinen Stücken aus Metall, Karton, Plastik etc., die ein unterscheidendes Design oder Wörter tragen.
