Note: Reformed branch of the Carmelite order that became its own order in 1593. Perceived laxity and abuses within the Carmelite order led to the reforms of St. Teresa of Avila and later of St. John of the Cross. The term 'discalced' refers to the practice of the reformers of wearing sandals instead of shoes and stockings. Discalced Carmelites focus on parochial and missionary work.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Hervormde tak van de karmelietenorde die in 1593 een zelfstandige orde werd. Toenemende zedelijke losheid en misbruiken binnen de orde der karmelieten leidden tot de hervormingen van Sint Theresia van Avila en later van de Heilige Johannes van het Kruis. De aanduiding 'ongeschoeide' verwijst naar het gebruik van de hervormers om sandalen te dragen in plaats van kousen en schoenen. Ongeschoeide karmelieten richten zich vooral op pastoraal en missionair werk. 
Spanish ..... Rama reformada de la orden Carmelita que se convirtió en una orden independiente en 1593. La creciente relajación y los abusos dentro de la orden Carmelita llevaron a las reformas de St. Teresa de Avila y después a las de San Juan de la Cruz. El término "descalza" se refiere a la práctica de los reformadores de usar sandalias desgastadas en lugar de los zapatos y medias. Las Carmelitas descalzas se concentran en el trabajo parroquial y misionero.
