Note: An indigenous Korean religion founded by Ch'oe Suun (1824-1864) as an attempt to directly appeal to the religious consciousness of the Korean people. Chondogyo was a reaction against Christianity and the traditional religions of Korea although it nevertheless contains elements of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, shamanism, and Roman Catholicism. After Suun was executed by the government, his successors Ch'oe Si-hyong and Son Piyong-hi fostered the movement until it grew to become a major Korean religion. The Chondogyo scriptures are the writings of the three founders. The religion views humans as bearers of divinity and as such, humans must treat one another 'as God.' Chondogyo stresses the universality of God and calls for a cooperative kingdom of God on earth based on faith, simplicity, steadfastness, and sincerity. There is no concept of eternal reward because the religion's aim is solely to bring righteousness and peace to the world. There are five recommended practices: chanting of a formula every night at nine o'clock; the use of water as a symbol of purity; attending a Sunday worship service; offering rice to the church on a regular basis; and praying in different ways. Chondogyo had an important role in modernizing Korea after 1894. It also opposed Japanese imperialism after 1919 and did not acquiesce to communism in North Korea after 1945. By the late 20th century, there were approximately 3 million members.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 韓國本土教派，由崔濟愚(Ch'oe Suun, 1824-1864)所創，企圖直接籲求韓國人的宗教感知。天道教是對基督教及韓國傳統宗教的反動，但仍包含有儒教、道教、佛教、薩滿教，及羅馬天主教的元素。崔濟愚被政府處死後，繼任者崔時亨(Ch'oe Si-hyong)和孫秉熙(Son Piyong-hi)發起運動，直至天道教發展為韓國主要宗教。天道教的經書為這三位創立者的著作。此宗教認為人類具有神性，因此要待他人「如神」。天道教強調神的普世性，且呼籲在俗世建立一個奠基於信仰、簡約、堅定不移及真誠的神之合作國度。此教並無永恆獎賞的概念，因其唯一目標就是要帶給世界公正與和平。五項建議實踐之法如下：每晚九點吟誦、將用水視為潔淨的象徵、參加週日敬拜、定期捐獻白米給禮拜堂，及不同方式的祈禱。西元1894年以後，天道教於韓國的現代化扮演重要角色。此教也反對西元1919年後的日本帝國主義，且不默從西元1945年後的北韓共產主義。到二十世紀末約有三百萬信眾。 |
| Dutch ..... Een inheemse Koreaanse godsdienst, gesticht door Choe Suun (1824-1864) in een poging een direct beroep te doen op het religieuze bewustzijn van het Koreaanse volk. Chondogyo was een reactie op het christendom en de traditionele godsdiensten van Korea, maar bevat wel elementen van het confucianisme, taoïsme, boeddhisme, sjamanisme en rooms-katholicisme. Nadat Suun door de regering was terechtgesteld, ontwikkelden zijn opvolgers Choe Si-hyong en Son Piyong-hi de beweging totdat deze was uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke Koreaanse godsdienst. De geschriften van het chondogyo zijn opgesteld door de drie oprichters. In deze religie worden mensen als dragers van goddelijkheid beschouwd en daarom moeten mensen elkaar behandelen ‘als God’. Chondogyo benadrukt de universaliteit van God en pleit voor een coöperatief koninkrijk Gods op aarde dat is gebaseerd op geloof, eenvoud, standvastigheid en oprechtheid. Er bestaat geen idee van eeuwige beloning omdat de godsdienst maar één doel heeft: de wereld gerechtigheid en vrede brengen. Er zijn vijf aanbevolen oefeningen: het reciteren van een formule, elke avond om negen uur, het gebruik van water als symbool van zuiverheid, het bijwonen van een zondagse eredienst, het regelmatig geven van rijst aan de kerk en het gebed (op verschillende voorgeschreven wijzen). Chondogyo speelde een belangrijke rol in de modernisering van Korea na 1894. Het verzette zich na 1919 ook tegen het Japanse imperialisme en legde zich niet neer bij het communisme in Noord-Korea na 1945. Aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw waren er ongeveer drie miljoen leden. |

Chondogyo fue una reacción contra la Cristiandad y las religiones tradicionales de Corea aunque, no obstante, contiene elementos de Confucianismo, Taoísmo, Budismo, shamanismo, y el Catolicismo romano. Después de que Suun fue ejecutado por el gobierno, sus sucesores Ch'oe Si-hyong y Son Piyong-hola impulsaron el movimiento hasta que creció para convertirse en la religión coreana más importante.
