Note: A barrier layer, or coating, is a reversible bond applied as a film between an irreversible adhesive and the surface it is mated to. In paper conservation, for example, a barrier layer is a thin film, such as gelatin or methylcellulose, deposited between the original paper surface and inpainting media applied to compensate for loss or damage. Such barrier layers allow for reversibility of the inpainting treatments.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Een barrièrelaag of coating is een verwijderbare binding die als vlies wordt aangebracht tussen een onverwijderbaar kleefmiddel en het oppervlak waaraan het gehecht is. In de papierconservering kan een barrièrelaag bijvoorbeeld een dun vlies zijn, zoals gelatine of methylcellulose, dat aangebracht wordt tussen het oorspronkelijke papier en het opvulmedium, dat wordt aangebracht om te compenseren voor schade of verlies. Zulke barrièrelagen zorgen ervoor dat de opvulling later weer verwijderd kan worden.
