Note: A nitrogen-rich, combustible, sludge-like black sedimentary deposit that occurs as a result of the decomposition of microorganisms in anaerobic conditions on the bottoms of lakes and seas. Compressed into hard rock, sapropel becomes oil shale or sapropelic coal.

Een brandbare, modderachtige, zwarte sedimentafzetting die rijk is aan stikstof en onder anaerobe omstandigheden op de bodem van meren en zeeën ontstaat door de ontbinding van micro-organismen. Wanneer sapropeel tot hard steen wordt samengedrukt, verandert het in olieschalie of sapropelisch kool. |
