Note: Romantic fictions having a prevailing atmosphere of mystery and terror, often combined with a love story. The genre was introduced in England ca. 1765, but soon became popular elsewhere in Europe, reaching its heyday in the 1790s. The genre has undergone frequent revivals in subsequent centuries. It is called "Gothic" because the early examples were often set in part among medieval buildings and ruins, such as castles or monasteries. |

Chinese (traditional) ..... 瀰漫神秘與恐怖氛圍的浪漫小說,常與愛情故事結合。此一文類約於1765年始自英國,但迅即在歐洲其他地區流行,於1790年代達到顛峰。爾後本類型文體經歷頻繁的復興。稱「哥德體」係因早期作品常有部份設定於城堡或修道院之類的中世紀建築與遺跡裡。 |
Dutch ..... Romans met een combinatie van mystery, romantiek en horror. Dit genre ontstond in circa 1765 in Engeland, maar werd ook elders in Europa al snel populair, met het hoogtepunt in de jaren negentig van de achttiende eeuw. Het genre beleefde in de daaropvolgende eeuwen regelmatig een wederopbloei. Men noemde dit soort romans ���gotisch' omdat ze zich aanvankelijk vaak gedeeltelijk afspeelden in middeleeuwse ruïnes en gebouwen, zoals kastelen en kloosters. |
German ..... Romantische Prosa, die in einer Atmosphäre des Mysteriösen und Schreckensvollen spielt, häufig im Zusammenhang mit einer Liebesgeschichte. Das Genre wurde ca. 1765 in England entwickelt, wurde aber bald in ganz Europa beliebt und erreichte in den 1790er Jahren seine Blütezeit. In den nachfolgenden Jahrhunderten hat das Genre viele Wiederbelebungen erfahren. Es wird im Emglischen "Gothic" genannt, weil die frühen Beispiele oftmals zu Teilen in mittelalterlichen Bauten und Ruinen spielten, wie beispielsweise in Burgen oder Klöstern. |
