Note: In modern usage, generally refers to small, portable writing desks that first appeared in 16th-century Europe, and were extremely popular in France in the 18th century. They are generally characterized by having a nest of drawers enclosed in a box, often with a sloping front that is hinged along the bottom edge and may be let down to provide a writing platform. An escritoire was placed on top of a table or had its own legs. Formerly, these small portable desks were also called "secretaries"; however, in modern usage, the term "secretaries" typically refers to larger pieces meant to be placed against a wall.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Verwijst in het moderne taalgebruik gewoonlijk naar kleine, draagbare schrijfbureaus die voor het eerst in de 16de eeuw verschenen en uiterst populair waren in het Frankrijk van de 18de eeuw. Kenmerkend is met name de aanwezigheid van een stel laden in een kist, meestal met een schuin geplaatst blad dat aan de onderkant met scharnieren vastzit en kan worden neergeklapt om op te schrijven. Vroeger werden deze kleine draagbare schrijfbureaus ook wel aangeduid als 'secretaires', maar in het moderne taalgebruik verwijst 'secretaires' meestal naar grotere meubelstukken die tegen een muur worden geplaatst. 
Spanish ..... Burós para escribir, especialmente de un tipo portátil pequeño, fabricado desde el siglo XVI y que consiste en un nido de cajones contenidos en una caja con un frente inclinado que está abisagrada a lo largo y puede dejarse caer para formar una plataforma de escritura. Término aplicado también a escritorios pequeños y elegantes diseñados después del forma francesa del siglo XVIII.
