Note: People who specialize in applying decoration, modification, and embellishment to the human body for purposes of cultural identity, beautification, or self expression. Their art includes such forms as scarification, tattooing, body piercing and painting, and hair styling. Body artists in this sense are typically practicing techniques that are based in ancient and traditional body modification; they thus differ from "body artists (performance artists)" who arose in the 1960s and whose art is closely related to performance art and conceptual art.

Kunstenaars die zich toespitsen op het aanbrengen van versiering, verandering en verfraaiing op het menselijk lichaam, om een culturele identiteit uit te dragen, om het mooier te maken, of als zelfexpressie. Tot deze kunst worden verschillende vormen gerekend, waaronder insnijding, tatoeages, piercings, lichaamsverf en coiffure. Lichaamskunstenaars in deze zin baseren zich veelal op oude en traditionele lichaamsmodificatietechnieken; ze verschillen dan ook van 'lichaamskunstenaars (performancekunstenaars)', die in de jaren 1960 ten tonele verschenen en wier kunst nauw verwant is aan performance- en conceptuele kunst. |
