| Dutch ..... Films die zich direct bezighouden met feiten en werkelijkheid van een bepaalde situatie en geen fictieve versie van de werkelijkheid geven. In deze films zijn echte mensen, plaatsen en gebeurtenissen te zien en geen acteurs of sets. De term verwijst naar het Franse woord 'documentaire', dat reisverslag betekent, en werd bedacht door de Franse filmmaker John Grierson. Een van de eerste bekende documentaires was 'Nanook of the North' (1922) over het leven van de Inuit. De twee belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in de documentaire waren cinéma verité in Frankrijk en direct cinema in de VS. De meeste van deze documentaires werden beïnvloed door tv-journaals en de lichtgewicht draagbare camera's waarmee filmmakers dichter bij hun onderwerp konden komen. In de jaren 70 en 80 van de 20ste eeuw werkte Errol Morris het genre van de documentaire verder uit door er fragmenten van tekenfilms in te gebruiken en door het gebruik van camera's met meerdere lenzen. |
