Note: Originally, and in Catholic theology, this term refers to the belief that God creates a soul for each individual person at conception or birth, in contrast to the belief in a soul's pre-existence. In the Middle Ages it was thought that this occurred 40 days after conception for a male baby and 80 days after conception for a female baby. While Augustine thought creationism and original sin were contradictory, Aquinas held that not believing in this tenet constituted heresy. In modern times the term has come to refer to the literal belief in the Genesis creation story as opposed to the theory of evolution associated with Darwin's 'The Origin of Species' of 1859. Linked to fundamentalism, creationism emerged in the 1960s in the United States, with its roots in the 19th century. Proponents of creationism demand that public schools equally teach creationism and evolutionary theory. Numerous creation science papers have been and continue to be published although they are not regarded as serious science outside of the movement.

Oorspronkelijk en in de katholieke theologie verwijst deze term naar het geloof dat God bij de conceptie of de geboorte voor elke individuele mens een ziel schept, in tegenstelling tot het geloof in een vooraf aanwezige ziel. In de middeleeuwen werd gedacht dat dit veertig dagen na de conceptie gebeurde voor een mannelijke baby en tachtig dagen na de conceptie voor een vrouwelijke baby. Hoewel Augustinus meende dat het creationisme en de erfzonde met elkaar in tegenspraak waren, stelde Thomas van Aquino dat ongeloof ten aanzien van deze leerstelling neerkwam op ketterij. In de moderne tijd is de term gaan verwijzen naar het letterlijke geloof in het scheppingsverhaal van Genesis in tegenstelling tot de evolutietheorie die wordt geassocieerd met 'The Origin of Species' van Charles Darwin uit 1859. Gekoppeld aan fundamentalisme kwam dit creationisme sterk op in de Verenigde Staten in de jaren 60 van de 20ste eeuw, met wortels in de 19de eeuw. Pleitbezorgers van het creationisme eisen dat op openbare scholen het creationisme en de evolutietheorie gelijkwaardig worden onderwezen. En la Edad Media se creía que esto ocurría 40 días después de la concepción en un bebé masculino y 80 días después de la concepción para un bebé femenino. Mientras San Agustín pensaba que el creacionismo y pecado original eran contradictorios, Santo Tomás de Aquino sostenía que no creer en este principio constituía una herejía. En tiempos modernos el término ha venido a referirse a la creencia literal en la historia de la creación del Génesis como opuesta a la teoría de la evolución asociada con "El Origen de Especies" de Darwin de 1859. Ligados al fundamentalismo, el creacionismo surgió en los años 60 en los Estados Unidos, con sus raíces en el siglo XIX.
