Note: Refers broadly to a variety of art created in the 1960s and 1970s; for earlier art emphasizing the idea rather than the object, use "conceptual art (art genre)." Critiquing the concept of art as commodity, the style Conceptual is characterized by an emphasis on communicating an idea and the artist's intent, rather than the production of the artwork itself, often including documentation referring to the creation process, such as maps, photographs, and notes. A genre of art in which the ideas or concepts that a work expresses or refers to are considered to be its defining characteristic, and the finished material result, if it exists at all, is regarded primarily as a form of documentation rather than as the art work. The genre emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s, arising at virtually the same time in North America, Europe and Latin America, and helping to inspire the acceptance of nontraditional media such as photographs, architectural drawings and performance art as art of equal status as traditional painting and sculpture. It directly inspired the medium of artists' books as an individual type of art. The term entered common art parlance through an article by Sol LeWitt, "Paragraphs on Conceptual Art" published in Artforum in 1967.

| Dutch ..... Veelomvattend begrip dat verwijst naar een breed scala van kunstuitingen uit de jaren 60 en 70 van de 20ste eeuw. De stijl levert kritisch commentaar op de kunst als handelswaar. Daarbij staat niet het vervaardigde kunstwerk zelf centraal, maar het overbrengen van een idee en de intentie van de kunstenaar. Vaak gaat het werk vergezeld van documentatie die als toelichting dient bij het ontstaansproces, in de vorm van bijvoorbeeld kaarten, foto's en aantekeningen. Een kunstgenre waarbinnen de ideeën of concepten die een werk uitdrukt of waarnaar het verwijst als wezenlijk worden beschouwd, terwijl het tastbare eindproduct, als dat er al is, hoofdzakelijk wordt gezien als een vorm van documentatie, en dus niet als kunstwerk. Het genre kwam op aan het einde van de jaren 60 en de vroege jaren 70, een proces dat zich vrijwel gelijktijdig voltrok in Noord-Amerika, Europa en Latijns-Amerika. De conceptuele kunst heeft er mede toe bijgedragen dat niet-traditionele media als foto's, bouwtekeningen en performancekunst een gelijkwaardige status verwierven naast de traditionele schilder- en beeldhouwkunst. Mede dankzij de conceptuele kunst worden kunstenaarsboeken nu als volwaardige kunstvorm gezien. Un genre d’art où les idées ou les concepts exprimés par l’œuvre ou auxquels elle fait référence sont considérées comme sa principale spécificité, et où le résultat matériel fini, pour autant qu’il existe, est principalement envisagé comme une forme de documentation plutôt que comme œuvre d’art.
