Note: Shiny black coating that is well-known on Athenian pottery. It is created by painting with a black slip mixture before a three-stage firing process. Oxygen is removed from the kiln in the first stage and the lack of oxygen and high temperature causes the clay to turn black while the slip mixture melts into black gloss. Oxygen is then re-introduced, causing the un-coated surface to turn red-orange. The black gloss is unaffected at this stage, and the coated area remains black.

| Dutch ..... Glanzende zwarte laag die veel te zien is op Atheens pottenbakkersgoed. Het wordt gemaakt door met een zwart slibmengsel op het object te schilderen voordat het in drie fasen wordt gebakken. In de eerste fase verdwijnt de zuurstof uit de oven, wat er in combinatie met de hoge temperatuur toe leidt dat de klei zwart wordt en het slibmengsel smelt tot een zwarte glans. Vervolgens wordt er weer zuurstof toegevoegd, waardoor het oppervlak waar nog geen deklaag op zit, roodoranje wordt. De zwarte glans blijft hierbij onaangetast en het gebied met deklaag blijft zwart. |
