Note: Instruments of torture, consisting of a bedlike frame on which a victim was stretched by turning two rollers fastened at each end to the wrists and ankles. Introduced into the Tower of London about 1420 by the Duke of Exeter. Known colloquially as “The Duke of Exeter’s Daughter,” it was used to extract confessions and incriminating information. Similar devices were known in Ireland in the 17th century and later in Portugal.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Martelwerktuigen bestaande uit een rek in de vorm van een bed, waarop het slachtoffer werd uitgerekt door middel van een rad aan elk uiteinde dat aan de polsen en enkels was vastgebonden. Werd in 1420 door de hertog van Exeter geïntroduceerd in de Tower of London. Het instrument stond in de volksmond dan ook bekend als 'de dochter van de hertog van Exeter'. Het werd gebruikt om bekentenissen en belastende informatie aan slachtoffers te ontlokken. Soortgelijke werktuigen werden in de 17e eeuw in Ierland gebruikt, en later in Portugal.
