Note: Visual effect in motion pictures in which one scene fades in to another. Both shots are seen briefly superimposed. The dissolve was first used to imply geographic or temporal transitions. Later, the optical nature of the dissolve was used for more tonal effects, such a character's state of mind, fantasy, or flashback sequences.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Visueel effect waarin een scène geleidelijk verdwijnt, terwijl een andere verschijnt. Zowel het begin van het nieuwe shot als het einde van het vorige shot zijn korte tijd tegelijkertijd zichtbaar op het scherm, meestal zo'n twee seconden. De dissolve werd aanvankelijk gebruikt om de geografische verplaatsing van de ene locatie naar de andere of het verstrijken van de tijd te impliceren, of, in tijden van censuur, om seksuele activiteiten te suggereren die niet mochten worden vertoond op het scherm. Later werd de optische aard van de dissolve gebruikt voor meer tonale effecten, zoals de gemoedstoestand of een fantasie van een personage.
