Note: Refers to relatively small panel paintings of Roman Catholic religious subjects produced in Mexico, other Latin American countries, and the Spanish-speaking United States. They were produced from Spanish colonial times through the present. The subjects may include saints or miraculous events wherein individuals dedicating the paintings are assisted through the divine intervention of the holy personages depicted. They are typically painted in bright colors, usually oils or tempera, on panels of pine, zinc, copper, or tin-plated iron. The paintings were used in household altars or served as offerings of religious devotion or thanksgiving.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar relatief kleine paneelschilderingen met rooms-katholieke religieuze onderwerpen, gemaakt in Mexico, andere Latijns-Amerikaanse landen en de Spaanssprekende delen van de Verenigde Staten vanaf de Spaanse koloniale tijd tot nu. De onderwerpen kunnen heiligen zijn of wonderbaarlijke gebeurtenissen waarbij de opdrachtgevers van de schilderingen hulp krijgen door hemelse tussenkomst van de afgebeelde heilige personages. Ze zijn meestal geschilderd in heldere kleuren, gewoonlijk in olieverf of tempera, op panelen van grenenhout, zink, koper of vertind ijzer. De schilderingen maakten deel uit van huisaltaren of dienden als religieuze dank- of toewijdingsoffers. |
