Note: Term applied to conical caps or bonnets with the peak bent or turned over in front. It originated in the ancient country of Phrygia in Asia Minor and is represented in ancient Greek art as the type of headdress worn by Orientals. In Rome the Phrygian cap was worn by emancipated slaves as a symbol of their freedom. During the 11th and 12th centuries, it was again extensively used. For similar caps worn in the French Revolution and identified with the cap of liberty, use "liberty caps." |

German ..... Der Begriff wird auf eine konische Kappe oder Haube bezogen, bei der die Spitze gebogen oder nach vorne umgeklappt ist. Sie hat ihren Ursprung im alten Phrygien in Kleinasien und wird in der antiken griechischen Kunst als eine Form des Kopfschmucks dargestellt, der von Orientalen getragen wurde. In Rom wurde die phrygische Mütze von emanzipierten Sklaven als Symbol ihrer Freiheit getragen. Während des 11. und 12. Jahrhunderts wurde sie wieder intensiver genutzt. Für eine ähnliche Kappe, die bei der Französischen Revolution getragen wurde und mit der Kappe der Freiheit identifiziert wird, verwende den Begriff "Jakobinermütze". |
