Note: Refers to several Christian monastic communities of the Byzantine Rite that follow the rule of St. Basil, their spiritual father; there are five major branches of the Order of St. Basil. The Basilian monastic community has been highly influential in the Byzantine community over the centuries, comparable to the Benedictine influence within the Western monastic community. St. Basil, theologian and archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia (modern Turkey), created his monastic rule between 358 and 364. St. Basil's simple yet strict rule asks followers to practice community living and advocates ascetic practices as a way to serve God more perfectly. His rule avoids the extreme asceticism of the desert hermits. Implied by St. Basil are vows of chastity and poverty, anticipating the later Western monastic systems, and aid to impoverished people is also called for. Attached to the monasteries should be schools for children in which the students can be tested for a possible religious vocation. St. Basil's rule was revised in the 9th century by St. Theodore of Studios. The Basilian order should not be confused with a Latin-rite congregation of the same name that was founded in France in 1822 but later active mainly in Canada; the members of this congregation devote themselves to educating children.

Verwijst naar verschillende christelijke kloostergemeenschappen van de Byzantijnse rite die de kloosterregel volgen van Sint Basilius, hun spirituele vader; er zijn vijf hoofdtakken van de Orde van Sint Basilius. De basiliaanse kloostergemeenschap is eeuwenlang zeer invloedrijk geweest in de Byzantijnse gemeenschap, vergelijkbaar met de benedictijnse invloed binnen de westerse kloostergemeenschap. Sint Basilius, theoloog en aartsbisschop van Caesarea in Cappadocië (in het tegenwoordige Turkije), schreef zijn kloosterregel tussen 358 en 364. De eenvoudige, maar strenge kloosterregel van Sint Basilius vereist volgelingen te leven in gemeenschappen en propageert een ascetische levenswijze als een manier om God voorbeeldiger te dienen. Het extreme ascetisme van de woestijnkluizenaars is afwezig. Sint Basilius' regels impliceren beloften van kuisheid en armoede, waarmee ze vooruitlopen op de latere westerse kloostersystemen. Se refiere a varias comunidades cristianas monásticas del Rito Bizantino que siguen las regla de San Basilio, su padre espiritual; hay cinco ramas principales de la Orden de San Basilio. La comunidad monástica Basilia fue altamente influyente en la comunidad bizantina a través de los siglos, comparable con la influencia Benedictina dentro de la comunidad monástica occidental. San Basilio, teólogo y arzobispo de Cesarea en Cappadocia (Turquía moderna), creó su orden monástica entre 358 y 364.La aun pura estricta regla de San Basilio pide a los seguidores practicar la vida comunitaria y aboca prácticas ascetas como manera de servir a Dios más perfectamente. Su regla evita el ascetismo extremo de los ermitaños del desierto. Implementado por San Basilio están los votos de castidad y pobreza, anticipando los últimos sistemas monásticos del Occidente tardío, y ayuda al pobre que también es requerido.
