Note: Cutting instruments consisting of a blade with a sharpened longitudinal edge fixed in a handle, either rigidly as in a table-, carving, or sheath-knife, or with a joint as in a pocket- or clasp-knife. Knives may be used to cut food, especially in serving and eating, as weapons, and for other purposes. The blade may be of steel or another metal or stone, as in the flint knives of early man, or of another material such as ivory or wood (as with a paperknife). The term also refers to tools that are shaped or used as knives, even if the edge is not particularly sharp or actually used for cutting.

Arabic ..... أدوات قطع تتكون من نصل ذو حافة طولية حادة ومثبتة في مقبض، إما بشكل جامد كما في سكين الطاولة أو سكين المنحوتة أو سكين الغمد، أو ذات مفصل كما في سكين الجيب أو سكين المشبك. وقد تستخدم السكاكين في تقطيع الطعام، خاصة في التقديم والأكل، كأسلحة، ولأغراض أخرى. قد يكون النصل من الفولاذ أو من معدن آخر أو حجر، كما في سكاكين الصوان للإنسان الأول، أو من مادة أخرى مثل العاج أو الخشب (كما هو الحال مع سكين الورق). يشير المصطلح أيضًا إلى الأدوات التي يتم تشكيلها أو استخدامها كسكاكين، حتى لو لم تكن الحافة حادة بشكل خاص أو تستخدم بالفعل للقطع.

Dutch ..... Snijgereedschap een eensnijdende kling om mee te snijden en vastgezet in een greep, ook wel 'heft' genoemd. Het gebruik varieert van het snijden van voedsel en andere materialen tot het gebruik als een wapen. de kling kan van diverse soorten metaal of andere materialen als ivoor of steen zijn gemaakt. de term verwijst ook naar gereedschap dat wel als mes gevormd is maar waarvan de kling niet scherp is, of voor snijden wordt gebruikt. 
German ..... Schneidwerkzeug, bestehend aus einer Klinge mit geschärfter Längskante, die in einem Griff befestigt ist, entweder in einer starren Verbindung wie bei Tafelmessern, Schnitzmessern oder Futeralmessern oder mit einem Mechanismus wie bei Klappmessern oder Taschenmessern. Messer werden verwendet, um Lebensmittel zu schneiden, vor allem im Rahmen der Essenszubereitung und des Essensvorgangs selbst; darüber hinaus werden sie als Waffen und für andere Zwecke genutzt. Die Klinge kann aus Stahl oder einem anderen Metall oder aus Stein sein, wie bei den Feuersteinmessern der frühen Kulturen, oder aus einem anderen Material wie Elfenbein oder Holz (wie bei einem Papiermesser). Der Begriff bezieht sich auch auf Werkzeuge, die entsprechend geformt sind oder als Messer verwendet werden, auch wenn die Kante nicht besonders scharf oder zum Schneiden genutzt wird. 
Italian ..... Strumenti da taglio costituiti da una lama con un bordo longitudinale affilato fissato in un manico. I coltelli possono essere usati per tagliare il cibo, specialmente nel servire e mangiare, come armi, e per altri scopi. La lama può essere di acciaio o di un altro metallo o pietra, come nei coltelli di selce del primo uomo, o di un altro materiale come avorio o legno (come con un tagliacarte). Il termine si riferisce anche a attrezzi che sono formati o usati come coltelli, anche se il bordo non è particolarmente affilato o utilizzato effettivamente per tagliare. 
Spanish ..... Armas que sirven principalmente para cortar, consistentes básicamente en una hoja puntiaguda con un solo filo y una empuñadura montada asimétricamente en relación al eje de la hoja, más cerca del dorso. Utensilio consistente en un borde afilado, por lo general, una hoja de acero provista de un mango, utilizado para cortar comida, especialmente para servir y comer.
