Note: Works that are the main focus or most important in a complex work or project; used to distinguish primary works from auxiliary or accessory works; the concept may apply to a wide variety of disciplines. In cataloging, the work is typically assumed to be a primary work, requiring clarification only when there is also an ancillary work. An example would be an office building, which is a primary architectural work having as an ancillary work the heating system. The concept may also refer to the status of separate, independent works, which may be grander or more important than other separate, independent "secondary works."

| Dutch ..... Werken die het hoofdonderdeel of het meest belangrijke element van een groter, complex werk of project vormen. De term wordt gebruikt om deze werken van ondergeschikte werken te onderscheiden en is van toepassing op verscheidene vakgebieden. Bij het catalogiseren wordt ervan uitgegaan dat een werk primair is; verduidelijking is dus alleen nodig als er tevens een ondergeschikt werk bestaat. Een voorbeeld is een kantoorgebouw dat als primair werk geldt, tegenover het ondergeschikte werk van het verwarmingssysteem. De term kan ook verwijzen naar de status van op zichzelf staande werken die als grootser of meer belangrijk worden gezien dan andere onafhankelijke, 'secundaire werken'. |
