Note: Elite Nahua military insignia in the form of a whole quetzal bird covered with feathers and supported by a frame worn on the back. An item sent to Tenochtitlan from the tributary province of Tochtepec, they were worn by tlahtohqueh (rulers) and pipiltin (nobles) in postclassic central Mexico. They were also used to identify Tlaxcalan military units of Ocotelolco. |

Spanish ..... Insignia militar nahua de élite en forma del ave quetzal, cubierto de plumas y mantenido por un marco que se llevaba en la espalda. Era un producto enviado a Tenochtitlan desde la provincia tributaria de Tochtepec, usado tanto por los tlahtohqueh (gobernantes) como por los pipiltin (nobles). También se usaba como signo distinctivo de las unidades militares tlaxcaltecas de Ocotelolco. |
