Note: In plants, the process or series of processes through which energy of light is absorbed by chlorophyll and utilized by the plants for the synthesis of complex organic compounds from carbon dioxide, with the accompanying oxidation of water to form oxygen. In animals, any of various similar processes by which the energy of light is converted to chemical energy for biosynthesis in bacteria, often involving alternative sources of carbon and not resulting in the generation of oxygen.

Dutch ..... Het proces of de serie processen bij planten waarbij chlorofyl lichtenergie absorbeert, waarna de planten de energie gebruiken voor de synthese van complexe organische verbindingen uit koolstofdioxide. Tegelijk oxideert water zodat er zuurstof ontstaat. Bij dieren betreft het vergelijkbare processen waarbij lichtenergie wordt omgezet in chemische energie voor biosynthese in bacteriĆ«n. Vaak worden hierbij alternatieve koolstofbronnen gebruikt en wordt er geen zuurstof opgewekt.
