Note: Women who have a romantic relationship with a man without being his wife. The term today usually has a negative connotation, and is generally only used in the context of certain historical periods. The mistress may be a powerful person in the household, even bearing children; it is often used when the husband is married to another person. Its usage can overlap with "concubines," although "mistresses" is typically preferred in historical periods of Europe and elsewhere in the West.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Vrouwen die een romantische verhouding hebben met een man, maar niet met hem getrouwd zijn. De term heeft tegenwoordig vaak een negatieve connotatie, en wordt vooral gebruikt in de context van bepaalde historische periodes. Een maîtresse kan een prominent figuur zijn binnen een huishouden, en zelfs kinderen baren; de term wordt vaak gebruikt als de man reeds getrouwd is met iemand anders. Het gebruik kan overlappen met 'concubines', maar 'maîtresses' heeft meestal de voorkeur binnen historische periodes in Europa en elders in het Westen.
