Note: Containers in Christian churches, made in the form of a dove and designed to be hung by chains over the altar. They had a door, sometimes hidden under a wing or on the back, that concealed a small cavity once used to hold the eucharistic bread. Eucharistic doves were formerly part of the standard liturgical furnishings for churches that could afford them. They were typically made of gold, silver, or another metal with enamelwork. |

Dutch ..... Van oorsprong middeleeuwse bewaarplaats voor geconsacreerde hosties. Deze holle duif heeft een opening met deksel in zijn rug. Hing aan kettingen aan het gewelf boven het altaar, verbeeldde de Heilige geest en de aanwezigheid van God. De duif kon omhoog getrokken worden, anders gezegd, vanuit de hemel (het gewelf van de kerk) nederdalen op het moment waarop de geconsacreerde hosties werden gebruikt.
