Note: Refers to an important Buddhist festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. It is particularly important in Theravada Buddhism. This festival is held on the full moon in the lunar month of Vesakha (falling in April or May). Celebrations include special devotional services and meritorious deeds such as offering food or alms to monks. Captive birds are sometimes released in memory of the Buddha's compassion. This day is observed as a public holiday in many countries in Southeast Asia.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een belangrijk boeddhistische feest ter herdenking van de geboorte, verlichting en dood van Boeddha. Dit is met name een belangrijk feest in het Theravada-boeddhisme. Het wordt gehouden op de dag van de volle maan van de maanmaand Vesakha (in april of mei). Tot de festiviteiten behoren speciale religieuze diensten en vrome handelingen als het geven van voedsel of aalmoezen aan monniken. Soms worden gevangengehouden vogels vrijgelaten in gedachtenis van het mededogen van Boeddha. In veel Zuidoost-Aziatische landen is dit een nationale feestdag. |
