Note: Refers to the religious ideas of individuals and groups who were greatly influenced by the reformer John Calvin (1509-64) as well as by 17th-century Calvinist scholars. Calvinism stresses the sovereignty of God over all aspects of life and the Bible as the sole rule of faith. Justification by faith alone is another central concept. Although predestination was not a leading axiom of Calvin's theology, it was heavily emphasized by his early followers, in part to distinguish themselves from followers of Luther. The Helvetic Confession (1566) and the Synod of Dort (1618-19) were important moments in the history of Calvinist theology; the latter affirming the 'five points of Calvinism': total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and the final perseverance of the saints. By the mid-17th century, Calvinism had spread from France and Holland to England and Scotland where it was espoused by the Puritans and taken to New England. While it has suffered rationalistic attacks, it influenced much church life and there has been a Neo-Calvinist renewal in modern times led by the theologian Karl Barth. As an historical force, Calvinism has had a wide impact on European and Northern American culture.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar de religieuze ideeën van mensen en groepen die sterk zijn beïnvloed door de hervormer Johannes Calvijn (1509-64) en door 17de-eeuwse calvinistische geleerden. Het calvinisme benadrukt de soevereiniteit van God over alle aspecten van het leven en de Bijbel als enige richtsnoer. Rechtvaardiging door alleen het geloof is een ander centraal begrip. Hoewel predestinatie geen vooraanstaand axioma in Calvijns theologie was, werd dat begrip zwaar benadrukt door zijn eerste volgelingen, deels om zich te onderscheiden van de aanhangers van Luther. De Helvetische Confessie (1566) en de Synode van Dordrecht (1618-19) waren belangrijke momenten in de geschiedenis van de calvinistische theologie; laatstgenoemde synode bevestigde in de Dordtse Leerregels de 'vijf punten van het calvinisme': totale verdorvenheid, onvoorwaardelijke verkiezing, beperkte verzoening, onweerstaanbare genade en ten slotte de volharding van de gelovigen. | French ..... Fait référence aux idées religieuses d’individus et de groupes fortement influencés par le réformateur Jean Calvin (1509-64) et par les érudits calvinistes du 17e siècle. Le calvinisme affirme la souveraineté de Dieu sur tous les aspects de la vie et considère la Bible comme la seule règle en matière de foi. La justification par la foi seule constitue un autre concept fondamental. Bien que la prédestination ne soit pas un axiome majeur de la théologie de Calvin, elle a été fortement privilégiée par ses premiers disciples, notamment pour se démarquer des élèves de Luther. Les Confessions helvétiques (Confessio helvetica de 1536 et la confession helvétique postérieure de 1566) et le Synode de Dortrecht (1618-19) ont marqué des moments décisifs dans l’histoire de la théologie calviniste, ce dernier énonçant les « cinq principes du calvinisme » : la dépravation humaine totale, l’élection inconditionnelle (prédestination), la rédemption particulière, la grâce irrésistible et la persévérance finale des saints. El Calvinismo enfatiza la soberanía de Dios por sobre todos los aspectos de la vida y la Biblia como el único precepto de fe. La justificación únicamente a través de la fe es otro concepto central. Aunque la predestinación no era un axioma principal de la teología calvinista, fue fuertemente destacada por sus primeros seguidores, en parte para distinguirse de los seguidores de Lutero. La Confesión Helvética (1566) y el Sínodo de Dort (1618-19) fueron momentos importantes en la historia de la teología Calvinista; este último estipuló los "cinco puntos del Calvinismo": la depravación total, elección incondicional, expiación limitada, gracia incontrarrestable, y la perseverancia final de los santos.
