Note: A Hindu-oriented movement that arose in the 1930s in Hyderabad out of the vivid religious experiences of a merchant named Dada Lekhraj. Lekhraj, using the new name of Prajapita Brahma, encouraged the movement's leadership to pass to female followers, where it still remains. In this millennial movement, the traditional roles of husbands and wives have been reversed. The Hindu belief in the possibility of escape from samsara is rejected in favor of a belief in a golden age that will follow our present age of decline, ending in a nuclear catastrophe. Only purified souls will continue to exist in this golden age and these souls will live as deities in a state of complete happiness. Followers recommend a lifestyle of vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and cigarettes, and celibacy with a large emphasis placed on meditation and yoga as ways to attain mental union with God. Their ideas are circulated in the form of messages or 'murlis' that are delivered daily at Brahma Kumari centers throughout the world. Followers have recently become active in the United Nations, for instance they inspired the Global Co-operation Movement. Current headquarters are located at Mount Abu in Rajasthan, India.

| Dutch ..... Een hindoeïstisch georiënteerde beweging die in de jaren 30 van de 20ste eeuw in Hyderabad is voortgekomen uit de levendige religieuze ervaringen van een koopman genaamd Dada Lekhraj. Onder de nieuwe naam Prajapita Brahma bevorderde Lekhraj de overgang van het leiderschap van de beweging in vrouwelijke handen, waar het is gebleven. In deze duizendjarige beweging zijn de traditionele rollen van man en vrouw omgedraaid. Het hindoeïstische geloof in de mogelijkheid te ontsnappen aan de samsara wordt afgewezen ten gunste van een geloof in een gouden tijdperk dat zal volgen op onze tijd van neergang, die zal eindigen in een atoomramp. Alleen gezuiverde zielen zullen in dit gouden tijdperk blijven bestaan en als goden in een staat van volkomen geluk leven. Aanhangers propageren een vegetarisch, celibatair leven zonder alcohol en sigaretten met een grote nadruk op meditatie en yoga als manieren om geestelijke eenwording met God te bereiken. Hun ideeën worden verspreid in de vorm van boodschappen of 'murli’s' die dagelijks worden afgegeven bij Brahma Kumari-centra over de hele wereld. Volgelingen van de beweging zijn recentelijk actief geworden bij de Verenigde Naties; zij hebben bijvoorbeeld de inspiratie geleverd voor de Global Co-operation Movement. Het hoofdkwartier bevindt zich tegenwoordig in Mount Abu in Rajasthan (India). |
| Spanish ..... Un movimiento de orientación Hindú que surgió en los años treinta en Hyderabad a partir de las experiencias religiosas vívidas por un comerciante llamado Dada Lekhraj. Lekhraj usando el nuevo nombre de Prajapita Brahma animó a los líderes del movimiento a aceptar seguidores femeninos, donde todavía permanece. En este movimiento milenario, se han invertido los papeles tradicionales de maridos y esposas. La creencia hindú en la posibilidad de liberarse del samsara es rechazada a favor de una creencia en una edad dorada que seguirá a nuestro actual tiempo de decadencia y que terminará en una catástrofe nuclear. Sólo las alma purificadas continuarán existiendo en esta edad dorada y estas almas vivirán como deidades en un estado de felicidad completa. Los seguidores recomiendan un estilo de vida vegetariano, abstinencia del alcohol y cigarros, y celibato con un gran énfasis en la meditación y yoga como medios para lograr la unión mental con Dios. Sus ideas circulan en la forma de mensajes o "murlis" que se entregan diariamente en los centros Brahma Kumari a lo largo del mundo.
