The style reflects the tastes of aristocratic landholders and the church, and generally imitates styles current in Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, and France, with some limited influence from native traditions of design and representation.

Verwijst naar de stijl en periode die loopt van de vroege 16de tot de vroege 19de eeuw in de door de Spanjaarden gekoloniseerde gebieden, in het bijzonder op de beide Amerikaanse continenten. De stijl is vooral zichtbaar in de schilderkunst, beeldhouwkunst en in kerkelijke en militaire architectuur. De stijl toont de smaak van de aristocratische grootgrondbezitters en van de kerk en imiteert in feite de gangbare stijlen uit Spanje, de Nederlanden, Italië en Frankrijk. Soms zijn er in beperkte mate invloeden uit lokale tradities en ontwerpen gebruikt. |
