Note: In psychological studies, denotes the dissociation or discrepancy between behavior and the conscious awareness of the behavior. The concept is generally used to describe benign behavior based on familiarity and repetitiveness, but is more often used to describe pathological behaviors that ensue from psychological conflicts between conscious and subconscious desires and result in sensory hallucinations and mild to severe catatonia. It influenced Surrealist theories associated with the power and legitimacy of unconscious expression, free association, and prime creative forces.

Dutch ..... Betekent in psychologisch onderzoek de dissociatie of discrepantie tussen gedrag en het zich bewust zijn van het gedrag. Het begrip beschrijft in het algemeen onschuldig gedrag dat is gestoeld op vertrouwdheid en herhaling. Het wordt echter vaker gebruikt om pathologische gedragingen te beschrijven die voortkomen uit psychologische conflicten tussen bewuste en onbewuste verlangens, en die zintuiglijke hallucinaties en lichte tot ernstige catatonie tot gevolg hebben. Het is van invloed geweest op surrealistische theorieën die verband houden met de potentie en legitimiteit van onbewuste expressie, vrije associatie en primaire creatieve krachten.
