Note: Genus containing various annual grasses of the family Poaceae (Gramineae), many producing edible grain. Barley was cultivated in Ethiopia and southeast Asia since prehistoric times. From biblical times through the Middle Ages, barley was the primary grain for producing unleavened bread and porridge throughout Europe, the Middle East, Egypt, and some parts of Asia. The grains are also been used to make malt beer. The residual stems, or straw, were used in Europe and Asia to make straw hats. The straw has also used used as a packing material, particularly for shipping glass and as an animal feed.

| Chinese (traditional) ..... 屬名，包含多種禾本科、年度收成的草本植物，其中有許多種類會生長出可供食用的穀粒。自史前時期開始，大麥就在衣索比亞和東南亞廣為栽植耕種。從聖經中所記載的時期到中古世紀，大麥是歐洲各地、中東地區、埃及和亞洲的部分地區的主要穀物，用來製作不發酵的麵包和麥片粥。穀粒也可用於製作大麥啤酒。在歐洲和亞洲，剩餘下來的麥莖（或稱為麥桿）則可用來製作草帽。稻草也被用來做為包裝的材料，特別是運輸用的稻草，而且也可做為動物的飼料。

| Dutch ..... Genus van eenjarige en overblijvende grassen uit de familie Poaceae (Gramineae). Vele daarvan produceren eetbaar graan. Al sinds de prehistorie verbouwt men gerst in Ethiopië en Zuidoost-Azië. Vanaf de Bijbelse tijd tot de Middeleeuwen was het in Europa, het Midden-Oosten, Egypte en sommige delen van Azië de belangrijkste graansoort voor het maken van pap en ongedesemd brood. Het graan gebruikte men ook om moutbier te maken. Van de overblijvende stengels of strohalmen maakte men in Europa en Azië strooien hoeden. Het stro gebruikt men ook als veevoer en als verpakkingsmateriaal, met name voor het vervoeren van glas. |
