Note: Dualistic Christian sect that thrived in Bulgaria from the tenth to the seventeenth century and more widely in the Byzantine Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries. It was founded in Bulgaria in the mid-tenth century by a priest who took the name Bogomil. The sect can be described as a fusion of dualistic, neo-Manichaean doctrines imported from the Paulicians and a local Slavonic movement aimed at reforming the recently established Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The central belief was that humanity and the visible, material world were created by the devil. Bogomils were hostile to most aspects of the Orthodox church as well as to civil authorities. The sect advocated a rigorously ascetic lifestyle, rejecting sex, marriage, possessions, and the eating of meat. Bogomils influenced the later Cathari of Europe.

| Dutch ..... Dualistische christelijke geloofsgemeenschap die in Bulgarije bloeide van de 10de tot de 17de eeuw en nog verder in het Byzantijnse Rijk in de 11de en 12de eeuw. De gemeenschap werd in het midden van de 10de eeuw in Bulgarije gesticht door een priester die de naam Bogomiel aannam. Deze gezindte kan worden omschreven als een samenvloeisel van dualistische, neomanicheïstische doctrines die werden geïmporteerd van de paulicianen en een lokale Slavische beweging gericht op hervorming van de kort daarvoor gestichte Bulgaars-orthodoxe kerk. Het centrale geloof was dat de mensheid en de zichtbare, materiële wereld waren geschapen door de duivel. Bogomielen stonden vijandig tegenover de meeste aspecten van de orthodoxe kerk maar ook tegenover het burgerlijk gezag. Zij bepleitten een rigoureus ascetisch leven en keurden seksuele omgang, huwelijk, bezit en het eten van vlees af. De bogomielen zijn van invloed geweest op de latere katharen in Europa. |
| Spanish ..... Secta dualísta cristiana que prosperó en Bulgaria desde el siglo décimo al decimoséptimo y más ampliamente en el Imperio bizantino en los siglos XI y XII. Se fundó en Bulgaria a mediados del siglo décimo por un sacerdote que tomó el nombre Bogomil. La secta puede describirse como una fusión de las doctrinas dualisticas y neo-Maniqueístas importadas de los Paulicianos y de un movimiento local eslavo con el objetivo de reformar la Iglesia Ortodoxa Búlgara recientemente establecida. La creencia central era que la humanidad y el mundo material visible, fue creado por el diablo. Los Bogomilos fueron hostiles a la mayoría de los aspectos de la iglesia Ortodoxa así como a las autoridades civiles. La secta propugnó un estilo de vida rigurosamente ascético, rechazando sexo, el matrimonio, posesiones, y la ingesta de carne. Los Bogomiles influyeron en los cataros posteriores de Europa. |
