Note: Originally used by the Syrian Monophysites and Nestorians, and later Muslims, to refer to Eastern Christians who remained faithful to the ruling of the Council of Chalcedon of 451 (affirming the two natures, divine and human, of Christ) when most Christians became Monophysite. The name was originally a pejorative one, referring to fact that they theologically agreed with the Byzantine emperor (Melchites meaning 'Royalists' or 'Emperor's Men'). In later use, the term refers to those orthodox Eastern Christians who follow an Arabic version of the Greek ritual, and particularly to those who are united to the communion of the Roman Catholic Church while retaining their separate organization.

Chinese (traditional) ..... 原被敘利亞一性論派(Monophysites)、聶斯托留派(Nestorians),和後來的穆斯林用指維護西元451年迦克敦會議(Council of Chalcedon)決議的東方基督徒,此會議主張基督同時具神性及人性,但當時大部分的基督徒已相信基督一性論。此詞彙原具輕蔑意味,表示此教派在神學上的主張與拜占庭皇帝(「麥爾基」意指「君主主義者(Royalists)」或「皇帝的人馬(Emperor's Men)」)一致。後來此詞彙用以指遵從源自阿拉伯之希臘禮儀的東方基督正教徒,尤指和羅馬天主教會密切交流,但仍維持獨立組織運作的教徒。  
Dutch ..... Oorspronkelijk gebruikt door de Syrische monofysieten en nestorianen, en later door moslims, om oosterse christenen aan te duiden die trouw bleven aan het gezag van het concilie van Chalcedon dat plaatsvond in 451 (waarbij werd aangenomen dat Christus zowel goddelijk als menselijk was) toen de meeste christenen monofysiet werden. De naam had aanvankelijk een negatieve connotatie omdat melkieten op theologisch gebied instemden met de Byzantijnse keizer (melkieten betekent 'royalisten' of 'mannen van de keizer'). Later wordt de term gebruikt om te verwijzen naar die orthodoxe, oostelijke christenen die een Arabische versie van het Griekse ritueel volgen, in het bijzonder die christenen die zijn verenigd in de gemeenschap van de rooms-katholieke kerk en toch hun eigen organisatie behouden. 
Spanish ..... Originalmente usado por los monofisistas sirios y Nestorianos, y posteriormente Musulmanes, para referirse a los cristianos orientales que permanecían fieles a las reglas del Concilio de Calcedonia de 451 (que afirmaba las dos naturalezas, divina y humana, de Cristo) cuando las mayoría de los Cristianos se convirtieron al monoteísmo. El nombre era originalmente uno peyorativo, refiriéndose al hecho que estaban de acuerdo teológicamente con el emperador bizantino (Melquitas significa "monarquía).
