Note: Refers to screens comprising two or more panels in a frame which has hinged sections that can be folded to adjust coverage. They are often decorated. Early examples include the Chinese form, mentioned as early as the 2nd century BCE. The earliest surviving examples date to the Ming dynasty. Folding screens were introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century; such screens were often designed in pairs in Japan. From the early 17th century eastern folding screens were imported to Europe and the form was soon adopted by European craftsmen.

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Verwijst naar schermen die bestaan uit twee of meer panelen en doorgaans versierd en vaak gelakt zijn. De vorm is uitgevonden door de Chinezen en werd in de 2de eeuw v. Chr. reeds genoemd. De oudste nog bestaande exemplaren dateren van de Ming-dynastie. Vouwschermen werden in de 8ste eeuw vanuit China in Japan geïntroduceerd; deze schermen werden vaak paarsgewijs ontworpen in Japan. Vanaf de 17de eeuw werden oosterse vouwschermen in Europa geïmporteerd en de vorm werd al snel overgenomen door Europese vaklieden. Net als de Japanse bestonden de Europese vouwschermen doorgaans uit zes panelen; ze waren echter vaak hoger en kloeker. 
Spanish ..... Se refiere a pantallas compuestas por dos o más paneles, típicamente decoradas y muchas veces laqueadas. Inventadas por los chinos, la forma fue mencionada ya en el siglo II a.C. Los ejemplares más antiguos que perduran datan de la dinastía Ming. Los biombos articulados fueron introducidos a Japón desde China en el siglo VIII; ese tipo de pantallas eran diseñadas usualmente en pares en Japón. Desde inicios del siglo XVII, pantallas articuladas orientales fueron importadas a Europa y la forma fue adoptada prontamente por artesanos europeos. Los biombos articulados europeos, así como los de Japón, estaban usualmente compuestos por seis paneles pero generalmente eran más altos y más sólidos.
