Note: Means of measuring wavelengths of the rays of a spectrum. To refer to the observance of how a substance transmits, emits, or responds to various wavelengths in the electromagnetic energy spectrum, use "spectroscopy." When the word is used in a bound compound term, it may form a synonym for spectroscopy, because the process of observing is not distinguished from the process of measuring; examples are "infrared spectrometry" and "infrared spectroscopy," which are considered synonyms.
