Note: Refers to works produced in Venice by Muslims and by Italian craftsmen trained in the Islamic style; the primary example comprises a large group of 15th- and 16th-century metal wares, primarily in European collections, once attributed to Muslim artists working in Venice. Veneto-Saracenic wares are domestic in nature and include bowls, spherical incense burners, candlesticks, and salvers. They are made of brass or bronze and are inlaid with geometric or arabesque motifs in silver, with occasional traces of gold and frequent additions of a black compound. The term is sometimes loosely applied to objects decorated with figural ornament and Western coats of arms. In the 19th century Lavoix popularized the identification of these objects as Veneto-Saracenic but his theory that Muslim metalworkers worked in Venice and trained Italian craftsmen in the Islamic style was challenged in 1970, when Huth questioned whether guild laws would have allowed foreign craftsmen on Venetian territory. No documentary evidence has come to light to prove or disprove either idea and it is often difficult to distinguish between Islamic originals and Western copies. Auld has identified three sub-groups: Turkoman, Mamluk, and Western.

| Dutch ..... Verwijst naar een grote groep 15de- en 16de-eeuwse metalen voorwerpen, hoofdzakelijk afkomstig uit Europese verzamelingen, die ooit werden toegeschreven aan moslimkunstenaars die in Venetië werkten. Veneto-Saraceense metaalproducten werden vooral in het huishouden gebruikt. Voorbeelden zijn kommen, bolvormige wierookbranders, kandelaars en dienbladen. Ze zijn vervaardigd uit koper of brons en ingelegd met geometrische of arabeske motieven in zilver, soms met sporen van goud. Vaak werd er ook een zwarte stof aan toegevoegd. De term wordt soms onnauwkeurig gebruikt om te verwijzen naar voorwerpen die zijn gedecoreerd met figuratieve ornamenten en westerse heraldische wapens. In de 19de eeuw duidde Lavoix de voorwerpen populair aan als Veneto-Saraceens. Zijn theorie dat islamitische metaalwerkers in Venetië werkten en Italiaanse ambachtslieden hadden geleerd te werken in de islamitische stijl werd evenwel bestreden in 1970, toen Huth in twijfel trok dat gildebepalingen buitenlandse ambachtslieden zouden hebben toegestaan om op Venetiaans grondgebied te werken. Er zijn nog geen documenten boven water gekomen die een van deze theorieën bevestigen of weerleggen, en het is vaak lastig om islamitische originelen van westerse kopieën te onderscheiden. Auld heeft drie subgroepen geïdentificeerd: Turkmeens, mammeluks en westers. |
| Spanish ..... Se refiere a un amplio grupo de metalistería de los siglos XV y XVI, que se encuentran principalmente en colecciones europeas y que alguna vez fueron atribuidos a artistas musulmanes que trabajaron en Venecia. Las vasijas véneto-sarracenas se empleaban para uso doméstico e incluían fuentes, quemadores de incienso esféricos, candeleros y bandejas. Éstas están hechas de latón o bronce con relieves geométricos o motivos arabescos de un compuesto negro. En algunas ocasiones la técnica es aplicada a los objetos de manera suelta y decorados con figuras ornamentales y empresas heráldicas occidentales. En el siglo XIX, Lavoix popularizó la identificación de estos objetos como véneto-sarracenos pero su teoría fue puesta en duda en 1970, respecto a que el trabajo de metalistería musulmana de Venecia y el entrenamiento del estilo islámico a artesanos italianos, cuando Huth cuestionó las leyes de los talleres con relación a si éstos habrían permitido la presencia de artesanos extranjeros en territorio veneciano. No existe documentación que evidencie o desapruebe la idea y muchas veces es difícil distinguir entre originales islámicos y copias occidentales.
