Note: Devices comprising a tube or pipe, often bent with one end placed in a container or reservoir of liquid, such as a bottle or basin, and the other end outside it at a lower level. The aim is to convey liquid upwards from the container and out from the lower end of the pipe or tube. The liquid is conveyed through differences in atmospheric pressure on the liquid in the upper container that pushes it into the tube as gravity pulls downwards the liquid in the lower length of tubing; another force that accounts for the rise of the liquid up the tube has been attributed to the cohesiveness or tensile strength of the moving liquid rather than to atmospheric pressure.

| Dutch ..... Voorzieningen die bestaan uit een vaak gebogen buis of pijp, met één uiteinde in een vloeistofreservoir, zoals een fles of schaal, en het andere uiteinde daarbuiten op lager niveau. Het doel is om de vloeistof vanuit het vat omhoog te brengen en vervolgens bij het lagere uiteinde van de buis of pijp eruit te laten komen. De vloeistof wordt getransporteerd met behulp van verschillen in atmosferische druk op de vloeistof in het hogere vat, waardoor de vloeistof omhoog wordt geduwd in de pijp, terwijl de zwaartekracht de vloeistof omlaag trekt in het lagere uiteinde. Het omhooggaan van de vloeistof in de buis kan soms ook worden toegeschreven aan de cohesie of treksterkte van de bewegende vloeistof. |
