Note: Distinctive torches used in ancient Greek and Roman marriage ceremonies, employed to accompany the bride in the wedding procession and to decorate the home of the groom. The torches used the pitchy sap that issued from a fir or pine tree that they called "taeda." They were so universally present in ancient weddings, that the marriage itself was sometimes called "taeda."

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Speciale fakkels die in de oudheid in Griekse en Romeinse huwelijksceremonies werden gebruikt om de bruid in de bruiloftsprocessie te begeleiden en om het huis van de bruidegom te versieren. Voor de fakkels gebruikte men het plakkerige sap van een spar of den, dat zij 'taeda' noemden. Bij vrijwel alle huwelijken werden ze gebruikt, zodat het huwelijk zelf soms ook 'taeda' werd genoemd.
