Note: Types of feudal lords to whom vassals paid tribute. If the vassal broke the feudal contract, the suzerain regained his fief by escheat. For the entities in modern international relations, where state has supremacy over another state which possesses its own ruler or government but cannot act as an independent power, use "suzerains (states)."

Additional Notes:
Dutch ..... Feodale heren aan wie vazallen schattingen betaalden. Als de vazal het feodale contract verbrak, viel het leengoed weer aan de suzerein toe. Gebruik 'suzereinen (staten)' voor de entiteiten in moderne internationale relaties waarin een staat suprematie heeft over een andere staat die een eigen bestuurder heeft maar niet als onafhankelijke macht kan optreden.
